Chapter Eight

Will had been waiting for Baz’s call, or a text—anything, he’d just needed to hear from him. Detective Morris had warned Will not to contact Baz until the detectives had interviewed him. Will was reeling from the news about Geoffrey, and being considered a suspect was fucking with his head.

“Don’t know about those bozos that just left, but most detectives are usually smarter’n they look,” Mr. Ewing said. “Don’t do ’em any good to let the perps know that. People get careless when they think they’re dealin’ with dimbulbs.”

Despite the stress weighing him down, Will laughed. “Is that so?”

“Yup, it sure is. I watch enough po-lees shows on TV to know how it works.” Mr. Ewing tucked a pinch of tobacco into his mouth.

Will refrained from lecturing him about the dangers of tobacco. He’d done it once, and the ass-chewing he’d received had made sure he held his tongue thereafter. Mr. Ewing knew the risks and said it was worth it. Will disagreed, but there was no point in arguing with an addict.

Mr. Ewing snapped his fingers, and Will caught the mint and tobacco scent that made him want to hurl. “Earth to Will. Where’d ya go?”

“It’s been a hell of a day,” Will replied. He took his phone from his shirt pocket and looked at it. It was almost eight-thirty. Surely the detectives have interviewed Baz by now?

“That it has. Wonder what kinda crap that ex of yers got himself into. Maybe he picked the wrong loan shark, or a pissed-off ex-patient did him in.” Mr. Ewing harrumphed. “Bet that’s it. Doctors now’days ain’t worth nothin’.”

So they’re worth something. Will tucked his phone away. “No telling. As far as I knew, Geoffrey never did anything illegal or risky. He did have a temper, though. He could have mouthed off to the wrong person. People have been killed for lesser things.”

“True ’nough. There’s some evil folks in this world.” Mr. Ewing started rocking in his chair. “Ya get to be my age and ya’ll have seen all kinds of weird and bad shit. Reckon ya already get some of that workin’ in the hospital.”

“Some, yeah. The things people will do to each other is heartbreaking. Disheartening. Both.” Will glanced at Mr. Ewing. “How old are you, anyway?”

Mr. Ewing smirked. “How old d’ya think I am?”

Will held up his hands. “Oh hell no, I’m not going there. That reminds me of the time my brother told me to ask his wife how far along she was. Nope. My ears burned for a week after she chewed me up one side and down the other. I learned all about women’s periods—”

“Nope, nope, that’s good enough for me,” Mr. Ewing said. “I’m seventy-nine. Ain’t got no family, as ya know. Sometimes I regret that, but hot damn, I had fun when I was younger. Still have fun with the help of some little blue pills, if ya know what I mean.”

Well, now Will knew more than he wanted to. “Er, okay.”

Mr. Ewing cackled.
